Member Spotlight

Milton Whitley

By Shelley Block

In July 2007, at the age of fifty-two, Milton Whitley began working with a basic literacy tutor at the Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) in Maryland.  At that time, he was unable to recite and print the complete alphabet; was unfamiliar with many letter sounds; and was at a loss when attempting to read all but a few words.  While his profound desire to become a full participant in life led him to seek assistance from the Literacy Council, he harbored a great deal of self-doubt about his ability to learn how to read and write. After years of failure and frustration, Milton believed that he was “unteachable.” The shame he felt—and his fear that others would find out—impacted every aspect of his life. “I was born and raised in this country, but I felt like a prisoner,” Milton said. “I was basically a dead man walking.” He had faced unemployment, struggled with drugs and alcohol, and for a time, lived in a shelter.

Woodrow Wilson

By Alison Werner, Senior Writer

Woodrow Wilson was born in Virginia in December 28, 1856, and raised in Georgia and South Carolina during the Civil War. He attended college at Princeton University in New Jersey and graduated in 1879. He then attended law school at the University of Virginia, but left and studied on his own to become a lawyer in Georgia. However, Wilson became bored with being a lawyer. He enrolled at Johns Hopkins University and earned a PhD in history and political science in 1886. Wilson became a professor at several universities including Bryn Mawr, Wesleyan, and Princeton. In 1902, he was elected president of Princeton.
