About United Literacy

United Literacy, a non-profit organization, provides resources and support to adult literacy learners in the United States. We aim to make literacy education accessible and worthwhile for adult learners.

Started in September 2007, United Literacy is a non-profit organization dedicated to making literacy an accessible and achievable goal for adult learners.

Our goal is to provide learners with comprehensive information on literacy organizations and programs in their communities. After a learner has taken the first step of admitting they need to learn to read, finding information on a program in their area can be difficult. We want to eliminate this obstacle and put motivated learners on the road to literacy.

In addition, we will provide learners with additional resources that will supplement and complement the literacy program they are participating in. The Literacy Tribune, our bi-monthly newsletter, will give learners an opportunity to put their literacy skills to work by reading articles on every day issues such as health, finance, education, and technology. Each issue will also feature one learner’s story that will encourage and inform learners on their journey to improving their literacy skills. We will also hold one-day conferences throughout the country in conjunction with local literacy organizations and/or libraries. The conferences will give learners the opportunity to meet other learners, share their stories, and learn about additional resources and programs available in their communities.

These are just our short-term goals. In the long-term, United Literacy plans to create a free web-based adult literacy curriculum for learners who are unable to attend a program in their area or who are looking for supplemental materials. The curriculum will include a text book and be accompanied by video lessons available for download for free. By utilizing the internet and web-based technologies, United Literacy’s goal is to remove the barriers to literacy.
