It’s September. Summer vacations have ended. Children have returned to school. Families have settled into new routines at home . . . at least in the United States. There are still many countries in the world where children do not have a chance to learn to read and write. According to the Department for International Development, 57 million children around the world do not go to primary school; 60% of those children are girls. They do not have schools nearby, or their families need them to work, or they stay home to care for younger brothers and sisters. In some countries, girls are not allowed to attend school. Just ask Malala.

On August 28 many people celebrated the 50th anniversary of the famous speech given by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “I Have a Dream.” It was fifty years ago, in 1963, that he gave his stirring speech at the March on Washington. It was part of the biggest civil rights demonstration in history. It was part of the “March for Jobs and Freedoms.” King’s speech was the high point of the event. It certainly is the most remembered. It’s nice to go to work when your computer runs just fine, and you get your work done. But then there are those days when your computer acts up and doesn’t want to even start. Those days are not nice. Time and time again it has happened to me. I rely on the computer a lot. I make my living running computers, and so when they go down, it’s not fun. |
